Course Details

Painting and Darwing: Artistic Creativity, Discovery and
Self Expression for All in a Balinese Context

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Participants will:
- develop basic skills and gain confidence and pleasure in drawing and painting
- develop spontaneity and a willingness to take risks when creating art
- understand the process of artistic creativity and its theoretical underpinnings through practical experience and introduction to theories of creativity
- develop the ability to express ideas, feelings and emotions visually (non verbally) in a variety of art media
- deepen and extend their understanding and appreciation of the formal elements and principles of art
- gain confidence in making qualitative judgments about art based on knowledge and personal experience
- enhance and/or increase their general creativity through a series of creative experiences that encourage imagination and originality
- perceive and recognize the revelevance of creative artistic experience to their own areas of expertise and recognize ways in which this can constructively influence/benefit their work as educators.

PROGRAM OUTLINE UNITS OF STUDY

Unit One Creativity: definition -introduction to basic theories and concepts.
Unit Two Objective Realism - Abstraction. A comparative study.
Unit Three Brain research as it relates to visual perception and artistic creativity.
Unit Four Assessment-appraisal-critical judgment and awareness.
Unit Five Practical involvement.

Unit One: Creativity: definition - introduction to basic theories and concepts

- Early and recent theories of creativity
- Definition (a class project/consensus)
- Practical exercise in creativity
- Discussion and analysis

Unit Two: Objective Realism and Abstraction - A comparative study.

- Study of examples from art history
- Practical work in both areas (abstraction-realism)
- Analysis/critique
- Theoretical and historical background

Unit Three: Brain research as it relates to visual perception and artistic creativity

- Drawing on the right side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards
- Drawing on the Artist Within, by Betty Edwards
- The Hidden Order of Art, by Anton Ehrensweig
- On Not Being Able to PAINT, byMarian Milner

Practical experimental work on engaging the Right Side of brain:

  1. guided contour drawing
  2. positive and negative space
  3. perspective
  4. light and shadow
  5. self expression
  6. Group Critique

Unit Four: - Assessment-appraisal-critical judgment and awareness.

- Elements and principles of art
- Motivation: integrity, honesty, candor, therapy
- Inner and extrinsic factors: gthe inner needh (Kandinsky, 1912), historical period- - Social factors- cultural factors- the advancement of art.

Unit Five: Practical involvement

- How to begin
- Developing creative potential to the fullest extent
- Sustaining creativity
- Spontaneity
