EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF BALI WHILE DEVELOPING ARTISTIC CREATIVITY AND SKILLS

July 15 to July 21, 2007 (48 hours)

1V. Brief description/purpose of instruction

The purpose of the instruction is primarily to promote confidence and ability in creating original art and understanding-appreciation of the visual arts for those who feel they would like to strengthen these abilities. The emphasis for achieving this is placed firmly on the development of several kinds of interrelated skills.

V. Objectives

  1. To gain formal and technical skills and increased creative/imaginative awareness while absorbing (indeed being quite thoroughly submerged in) Balinese culture, history, beliefs and the Balinese way of life.

  2. To achieve the above while studying Balinese art and recent developments in particular, the influence of early European painter/settlers in Bali being a major component. Participants will see that the impact of foreign painters in Bali is largely a reflection of developments in European painting: e.g., Cubism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism and later, Post Modernist abstraction which were current or recent at the time

V1. Brief outline of instruction

In this course hands-on practice almost always precedes theoretical and historical work or is very closely tied to it. There is a large proportion of studio work, especially in color theory, drawing and compositional arrangement.

A balance of studio work, lectures, discussions and critiques is planned. Visits to local museums and galleries, artistsf studios, craft centers are an essential feature. Participants will also visit temples and attend mainly traditional Balinese dance and theatrical and musical performances both in Ubud and at various sites in the surrounding villages.

V11. Required readings: Most books on Bali that cannot be obtained abroad can be bought while in Bali. Any of the books on or by Steiner below will suffice for the Steiner portion.

- The Damnation of Newton: Goethe's Color Theory and Romantic Perception, by Frederick Burwick

- Toward a Phenomenology of the Etheric World: Investigations into the Life of Nature and Man, by Jochen Bockemuhl SHOULD READ

- Images of Power: Balinese Paintings Made for Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead, by Hildred Geertz

V111. Evaluation Procedures

These include self-assessment, mutual assessment, discussion and final teacher assessment.

Each participant will submit a Final Paper-Portfolio, a written paper of 4 pages combined with a digital portfolio of the work produced during and/or after the course.

Written notes should accompany the digital photographs of the candidatefs own work indicating title (where applicable), and the media and techniques used. There should be some attempt to evaluate the included samples.

Candidates should be able to recognize the nature and extent of the influence of early European artist/settlers on the history of Balinese painting. They should also note how cultural, religious and superstitious features impact on Balinese painting and aesthetics.

In addition, all participants are required to consider how the course may have benefited them either personally or professionally, and how the experiences and knowledge gained in this course might beneficially influence the work they do in their chosen professions or occupations.
