Embracing the Spirit of Bali Through Creativity and Multiple Perspectives


Development to SUNY, Buffalo State: Graduate Semester Credit for Professional Development

I. Title of P.D. workshop:

EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF BALI THROUGHT CREATIVITY AND MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES

II. Number of proposed graduate semester credits:

Three (minimum 45 hours instruction time)

III. Exact dates and hours of instruction:

- July 29-August 4, 2007 (48hours) Note: Exact daily schedule follow.

- October 14-20, 2007 (48 hours)

IV. Brief description/purpose of workshop:

The course consists of two independent, yet deeply inter-related, elements:
i). developing hands-on skills in painting, drawing, and photography with Balinese culture, aesthetics, and natural flora and fauna as the primary focus.
ii). The study of Balinese history and culture within the context of Asian cultures and peoples.

V. Objectives:

  1. To gain an understanding of Balinese culture and history, with a
    particular emphasis on religious beliefs and aesthetic concepts.

  2. To appreciate Balifs unique position within the context of South
    East Asia culturally, historically, and aesthetically.

  3. To develop the skills and confidence to express onesf thoughts
    and feelings through the visual arts, inspired by Bali and its
    rich and unique culture and tradition.

VIII. Evaluation Procedures:

These include self-assessment, mutual assessment, discussion, and final teacher assessment.

Each participant will submit a Final Paper-Portfolio, a written paper of 4 pages combined with a digital portfolio of work produced during and/or after the course.

Written notes should accompany the digital photographs of the candidatefs own work indicating title (where applicable), and the media and techniques used. There should be some attempt to evaluate the included samples.

There should be an attempt at synthesis, i.e., indicating the links between the two elements of the course: arts and culture. In addition, all participants are required to consider how the course may have benefited them either personally or professionally, and how the experiences and knowledge gained in this course might beneficially influence the work they do in their chosen professions or occupations.
