COURSE OVERVIEW

This course consists of two interdependent elements:
ONE: The development of hands-on skills in painting, drawing and photography with Balinese culture, aesthetics and natural setting (landscape, flora and fauna etc) as the primary focus.
TWO: The study of Balinese history and culture within the context of Asian cultures and peoples. These two elements are considered as deeply interrelated. To understand Balinese art, for example, one must appreciate the notion of "Taksu" or "Spiritual Charisma". The landscape and geography of the island deeply influence its mentality and culture.
No previous artistic experience or obvious artistic talent is necessary....the emphasis for this course is firmly placed on enjoyment, individual discovery, and convivial discussion.

A balance of studio work, lectures, discussions and field trips is planned. Visits to art museums and galleries, temples, artist's studios and craft centers and Balinese dance performances are an integral feature of the course. Participants will have the opportunity to learn traditional batik techniques from local Ubud Artist Nyoman Suradnya. There are also opportunities to draw from the nude figure.
You will not just develop your own creative potential but also increase your understanding of Bali's unique position within the context of South East Asia culturally and historically.
